Singer Brad Paisley has expertly carved a niche for himself as a singing storyteller with sensitive ballads that pay homage to being a loving husband and family man and humor-driven mid-tempos that celebrate male bonding and never veer very far away from the country scene. But with his new single, 'Welcome to the Future' from the recently released album American Saturday Night, he takes a different turn from the long-beaten path and blends old sounds together to create a new formula.

Holding true to the popular saying ‘if it’s not broken, don’t fix it’, Paisley does not completely abandon his roots and relies largely on memories to help portray his story, turning ‘Welcome to the Future’ into a modernized counterpart of sorts for previous singles such as ‘Letter to Me’ and the current smash ‘Then’.

Children of 1980’s will happily think back to yesteryear with Brad Paisley when he begins the song with recollections of being a ten-year-old little boy who longed to be playing Pac-Man at the arcade instead of being cooped up in the car for a lengthy road trip; who is now boggled by the fact that the childhood favorite can be played anytime, anywhere on his phone.

Then, as an adult he thinks of the numerous letters his grandfather penned to his grandmother during an army stint in the Philippines and marvels at his recent business conference that was held via a video chat. And in the final verse, which is the most poignant and morally conscious, there are references to Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King and the enormous advances society has made with acceptance and tolerance.

While layered with the traditional guitar licks of the country genre , ‘Welcome to the Future’ is enhanced with techo beats similar to the background music heard in video games and a drumbeat more typically heard in rock songs. On the paper, the combination may sound like a royal mess, but in reality, somehow works.

Brad Paisley’s laid back, pleasant vocals are expectedly enjoyable and the chorus, which is reminiscent of John Mellencamp’s ‘Wild Night’, is instantly catchy and makes you want to take a break from the high-tech world and sing along.
