Phil Vassar just might be the hardest working man in country music. He’s certainly one of the ones with the longest track records, and has always been one of the most versatile. The man plays the piano, writes many of his own songs, writes about cross-dressing trucks drivers and moves seamlessly to a beautiful ballad like “Everywhere I Go.”
The song is the second single from his upcoming fifth studio album since 2000, and represents his 19th studio single, all of which have made the top 50 country charts (two of them have made number one). “Everywhere I Go” is a song about moving on. Vassar’s protagonist is trying to move on from the image of a lost love, following him everywhere he goes. Phil Vassar attempts to change things up, perhaps like Keith Anderson’s smash “I Still Miss Her,” but finds himself breaking down time after time.
He still sees her face everywhere he goes, and by the end of the song he no longer sounds bitter, but empowered and experienced-glad for having loved and lost instead of the alternative. The memory comforts him.
The song is rife with Vassar’s unrefined, yet powerful and emotive, singing style. The music is fueled by steady percussion, a powerful piano melody and a leaping and bounding fiddle over the climax of the chorus. Vassar leaves no emotion out of his vocal, and the song is quite the heartbreak coming from the middle aged singer with obvious experience.
Vassar, the grizzled veteran at 46, continues to make music for fans across the age spectrum, and like a fine wine, and so many in his genre, continues to get better with age.
