Zac Brown Band “Highway 20 Ride”

Review by Amy Blizzard

Recent Grammy nominees and longtime Georgia favorites, The Zac Brown Band, have widely broadened their fan base to zenith extremes across the country with their hit album 'The Foundation' that spawned three number one singles: 'Chicken Fried, 'Whatever It Is' and 'Toes'. The lives of front man Zac Brown and band members Jimmy De Martini, John Driskell Hopkins, Coy Bowles, Chris Fryar and Clay Cook have been forever changed since 2008, and today; instead of remaining in the bar scene and under the radar, they are front and center playing on stage in front of the country music stars and legends who are now their peers at award shows.

Zac Brown Takes That Highway 20 Ride

In spite of massive success and profound critical acclaim, part of the grand appeal of the Zac Brown Band continues to be their casual, laid back demeanor and style that resonates with regular, blue collar radio listeners. And their ability to relate is particularly palpable in the new single "Highway 20 Ride"'.

Written by Zac Brown and Wyatt Durette, 'Highway 20 ride' focuses on a little boy and his father who are frequently separated by distance due to a messy divorce. But the miles and roads between them do not diminish the man's abundant love for his son. As he makes the drive on Highway 20 back and forth, he hates wasting a day driving instead of holding his son and regrets that he could not create a picture perfect family for him.

He acknowledges that someday, when the young boy is older, he may hate him for not always being there, but eagerly hopes the day will come when his son is also a grown man when he will look back, see the situation through his eyes and know how deeply he always cared and that the moments they spent together were the greatest of his life and worth every mile he had to travel to be there to create them.

'Highway 20 ride' allows Zac Brown to present one of his most sincere and tender vocals to date. Much like Toby Keith's 'Wayman's Song', the acoustic ballad encapsulates the gentle calmness and personal touch of a country lullaby and organically highlights the band's vast diversity. With this new single, Zac Brown and his cohorts just might make history once again and earn their fourth number one hit.

Highway 20 Ride Lyrics

I ride east every other Friday
but if I had it my way
the day would not be wasted on this drive.
and I want so bad to hold you
son there’s things I haven’t told you
your mom and me couldn’t get along

so I drive, and I think about my life
and wonder why, that I’ll slowly die inside
every time I turn that truck around right at the Georgia line
and I count the days and the miles back home to you
on that highway 20 ride.

The day might come you’ll realize
That if you see through my eyes
There was no other way to work it out
And a part of you might hate me
Son please don’t mistake me
For a man that didn't care at all

And drive, and I think about my life
And wonder why, that will slowly die inside
Every time i turn that truck around right at the Georgia line
And I count the days and the miles back home to you
On that highway 20 ride.

So when you drive, and the years go flying by
I hope you smile, if I ever cross your mind
It was the pleasure of my life
And I cherished every time
And my whole world it begins and ends with you
on that highway 20 ride

Whoa 20 ride
Highway 20 ride.
and I ride
